The UK My Little Pony convention and pony collectors will be dismayed (but not surprised) to learn that mainstream media is only interested in reporting on pony collectors as freaks.

Scientist? Banker? My Little Pony fanatic?
This article is particularly bad and includes such hard hitting reporting as “The first generation comprised six characters, named collectively as the Earth Ponies” which is of course, not even close to resembling the truth. If you really want to know about the first generation of MLP, you may want to put up a copy of this. With standards like this, you too can be a journalist! Watch: “People who collect ponies collect them because they are made of lollipops and taste like honey glazed ham!” See! We reported it so now its true, no need for research or facts!

Today I was reminded about what a gift it is to have the passion of a
collector. Whether you collect art, vintage Hollywood, sports or comic
books, we Collectors know we always have a “special place” we can go
when the world seems so dark, depressed and doomed. Over the past week
(or several months come to think of it) I find the media to be a
reliable source of misery. I would never have believed that CNN and Fox
news would become my last choice for evening Television. Yet, not even
the persistent, gloomy economic and political news can dampen the
excitement of collecting. That’s what makes collecting more then just a
hobby. It’s an escape to a better, healthier state of mind. To me that
is priceless. I call it “the Collector High”. It ’s unfortunate there
are so many good folks that have no “better place” to go to as these
ominous clouds shower us with this temporary dismal and pessimistic

Integrity Toys and Jason Wu have announced a doll based on “I Kissed a Girl” singer Katy Perry to ship this fall. The doll is limited edition (only 500 are being made) and is already sold out on pre-orders though you can sign up for the wait list for the doll here.

While a doll of the singer may seem random, especially since she has only had one album, there is actually a connection that makes the release of this doll sort of cool. Katy Perry’s music video for “Ur So Gay” (the first single off of her album One of the Boys) features a cast of Barbie like fashion dolls. These dolls were also designed by Integrity Toys so its particularly fitting that they decided to make one of the singer.

One sports writer for the Daily Lobo in New Mexico thinks that the boys of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are a perfect metaphor for the NFC East:

Donatello best represents the New York Football Giants: the smart one. Donatello is always making the right choice and at the right time - much like the Giants’ Super Bowl XLII run last February. He is the least violent one but can be dangerous when overlooked - kind of like that blank gaze Eli Manning gives after every single play.

Michelangelo represents the Washington Redskins: easy-going. Michelangelo is laid back and gives us TMNT fans some humor, much like the Washington Redskins. Clinton Portis delivers his crazy alter-ego news conferences; Antwaan Randle El offers his great introduction voice during prime time games; and, finally, owner Bill Snyder spins the coaching carousel over the last decade (the Redskins have had five - yes five - coaches since 2000).

Leonardo symbolizes the Philadelphia Eagles: the leader of the four. Leonardo is strong, courageous and decisive, much like the Eagles have been since 1999 under Andy Reid. Eagles quarterback Donovan
McNabb can be compared to Leonardo, too, after his performance in Monday night’s loss to Dallas. McNabb led his team and played great. However, Leonardo would also butt heads with our last turtle, Raphael.

Raphael represents the Dallas Cowboys: the social outcast of the group. Raphael is extremely aggressive and the most dangerous turtle. He also was well-known for his rivalry with Leonardo, which is kind of like the Philly-Dallas rivalry and the ongoing battle of words between Terrell Owens (am I the only one who notices that T.O. can stand for turnover, too?) and McNabb since Owens’ departure from the “City of Brotherly Love” in 2006.

If the news of a live action TMNT movie made you excited or filled you with horror, we have some news. See, as we originally posted, TMNT creator Kevin Eastman leaked the news that they were working on a live action TMNT movie. However, as any Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fan knows, Eastman sold out his half of the characters to Peter Laird some time ago so the fact that he had made this announcement was a little fishy.

Well, Steve Murphy and Peter Laird took to the internet to call these rumors complete nonsense and then Eastman appologized. While their statements speak to the tension between the two TMNT creators, Peter Laird did do a great interview with MTV about some TMNT projects that are actually happening.

Some highlights from the interview include the promise that they will NOT be making a live action movie (with turtles in costumes) so the internet community can relax on that count.

Another interesting part is that Laird would love to cast the voices of Casey Jones and April O’Neil (Chris Evans and Sarah Michelle Gellar aka Buffy) as the live action versions of these roles which could be really interesting.

LONDON, ENGLAND — Thought conventions were just for Spock lovers and sci-fi fans? Well think again! Hundreds of My Little Pony fans will be descending on Brunel University in October for the 5th Anniversary of the International My Little Pony Convention (Ponycon).

The annual event attracts collectors and families from around the world, many of whom will be arriving in fancy dress.

This year will see the return of the popular pony auction, where convention-goers can bid for rare and celebrity-signed ponies. Last year the convention auctioned off an astonishing selection of ponies, signed by public figures as diverse as Bill Bailey, Terry Pratchett, The League of Gentlemen, William Hague and David Cameron.

Got ponies in the attic? Members of the public will have the opportunity to have their collections identified and valued at Antiques Roadshow style evaluations.

There will also be display and trade stalls, an art exhibition and fashion show as well as children’s activities and competitions. The event is also attracting an increasing number of artists, who customise ponies to make them look like anything from their favourite Harry Potter characters to the cast of Doctor Who.

American collector, Angela Garrett will be making the annual trip from her home in Michigan, USA especially for the event:

“There’s such a great atmosphere at Ponycon,” Angela explains, “You’ll never see so many ponies in one room, nor such excited looks on children’s faces.”

Toy manufacturer Hasbro, the company behind the My Little Pony brand, may also be in attendance, giving visitors an exclusive preview of Pony merchandise due for release in 2009. Hasbro has generously donated a limited edition convention exclusive pony, made especially for the event and only available for sale to attendees. Convention organisers are hoping that this year’s event will be as popular as last year’s, which raised £5,000 for The Rainbow Centre.

This year’s nominated charity is Wellchild, a children’s charity of which Prince Harry is royal patron. All profits raised on the day will be donated to the charity, which has been helping sick children and their families throughout the UK for over 30 years.
